Conclusion

f8

The lenses are very close in performance with the 35mm f1.4L, 35mm f2 and 24mm f1.4L II on the top of the pile with the 28mm f1.8 performance spoilt by a dip around 15mm offset but otherwise the centre and corner of full frame is quite good and close to the more expensive L lenses.

The 16-35 f2.8L II performance at 28mm is shown for comparison has quite good 10 lp/mm contrast but the 30 lp/mm fine detail generally follows the 24mm f2.8 except for recovering at the edge of full frame.

The fast lens performances are very close with 35mm f1.4L trailing slightly in contrast but holding up better for detail and contrast at the edge.

The 28mm f1.8 being the exception where corner contrast is not as good as the 35mm f1.4L and 24mm f1.4L II beyond about 15mm offset from the axis; fine detail is also a bit lower between 7 and 15mm for the cheaper lens, however considering the price and weight difference it holds up well.

The 16-35 f2.8L II performance at 28mm is only comparable with the three slower lenses where is generally produces better contrast and similar fine detail except for the 28mm f2.8 which is slightly better between 5 and 15mm offset from the optical axis.
