Conclusion

The 24-70mm f2.8 comes out best followed closely by the 24mm f2.8 and 24mm f1.4L with the 16-35mm f2.8 only beating the 18-55mm kit lens at the image edges, however the 16-35 II has much improved full frame edge performance.

The new EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS has similar contrast to the 17-40 and slightly better detail.

NB the 24mm f1.4L is a very expensive lens but does not have much better worst case performance than the f2.8. (This conclusion follows through with the average of the two MTF directions also).

We notice straight away the 24-70mm zoom accounts well for itself, surpassing all the other lenses except for the 24mm primes for satisfactory detail coverage.

Again the 16-35mm has not done well, only out performing the kit lens for satisfactory contrast coverage.

Here the best contrast if from 24-70mm zoom although the 24mm f1.4L is being compared at a significant aperture disadvantage.

The new EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS does not quite match the wide open performance of the 24-70.

Things are more equal for detail although the 24mm f1.4L performance drops beyond about 18mm.  However this is a very impressive performance for the f1.4 considering its wider aperture.

Things are comparable with MTF derived Bokeh, the 16-35mm trailing and the f1.4 last as to be expected. Again, the difference for the f1.4 is not great considering the disadvantage it is at.
